That is the whole ambition, and almost every design decision on this\nsite falls out of it.\n\n## Identity is a key, not an account\n\nAn account is a row in someone's database, and it means what that database says\nit means. A key is a mathematical claim: this byte sequence was signed by\nwhoever holds the private half, and anyone can check it without asking\npermission. The first is a relationship with a platform. The second is a fact.\n\nThe practical consequence is that publishing has no login step. A post is a\nfile, a signature over that file's bytes, and a public key that has been\npublished somewhere durable. Verification is a function, not a request.\n\n## Bytes, not meaning\n\nEvery hash here commits to raw bytes and not to parsed content. This is\nunglamorous and it is the only version that survives contact with reality:\nfront-matter parsers change, YAML has opinions about `no` and `2026-08-19`, and\nmarkdown renderers are upgraded. A hash over the rendered output would break on\na dependency bump. A hash over the file does not.\n\nIt also means the check is trivially reproducible. `sha256sum` on the file is\nthe whole verification of one entry, and the chain on top of it is three more\nlines of shell.\n\n## What the chain buys\n\nHashing one file proves that file is unmodified. Chaining each record to the one\nbefore it proves something stronger and more useful: that the *history* is\nunmodified. You cannot quietly drop an embarrassing entry from the middle, and\nyou cannot reorder two entries to make a decision look like it came before the\nevidence for it.\n\nCorrections append. A superseding entry points at what it corrects, and both\nstay readable forever. This is uncomfortable by design — it is the property that\nmakes the record worth reading at all.\n\n## Why the timeline stays out of it\n\nThe stream this post appears in has no correctness obligations. It is a\npresentation layer: it decides what a reader sees first and how much of it.\nThe changelog has nothing *but* correctness obligations.\n\nKeeping them apart means a rendering bug in the feed cannot fail a build over\nprovenance, and a chain verification failure surfaces in exactly one place\ninstead of five. The first sprint of a reading surface is not where you want to\ndiscover a new consumer of your hash chain.\n"},{"id":"2026-08-19-a-url-with-no-mercy","kind":"note","url":"https://mindbenderzzz.com/posts/a-url-with-no-mercy","published_at":"2026-08-19T18:20:00.000Z","title":null,"tags":["notes"],"author":{"handle":"mindbender","name":"Mindbender"},"reading_time_minutes":1,"cursor":"2026-08-19T18:20:00.000Z_a-url-with-no-mercy","body_md":"\nFiled under things that break layouts:\nhttps://example.com/a/deliberately/absurd/path/that/never/breaks/because/nothing/in/it/is/a/word/boundary?and=a&query=string&just=keeps=going&session=8f3a1c2e9b7d4a6f0e5c3b1a9d8f7e6c5b4a3928\n\nIf the stream is still one column wide on a 375px screen, `overflow-wrap` is\ndoing its job.\n"},{"id":"2026-08-19-two-consumers-one-ordering","kind":"note","url":"https://mindbenderzzz.com/posts/two-consumers-one-ordering","published_at":"2026-08-19T16:05:00.000Z","title":null,"tags":["timeline","spec"],"author":{"handle":"mindbender","name":"Mindbender"},"reading_time_minutes":1,"cursor":"2026-08-19T16:05:00.000Z_two-consumers-one-ordering","body_md":"\nTwo consumers, one ordering, different truncation.\n\n## The human view\n\nTwenty items, notes in full, articles as cards, and a link at the bottom that\nends.
